Curiosity

This work emerged from my interest in photographing people in their natural states. It encompasses images from twenty-two museums in ten countries ranging from the NASA museum in Houston to the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology.

Adults tend to go to museums of their own free will. Since there is little chance of running into somebody they know or as they have no utilitarian expectations, they dress in comfortable clothing, especially if they are in a foreign country. What’s more because they tend to go to museums in search of things that they enjoy they’re in a carefree mood and are relaxed.

Therefore in museums people feel comfortable enough to drop their social guises, their masks, because they’re not concerned with whatever else may be going on around them. This is why I like photographing people at museums, in their most natural states.

“Our ability to see sometimes consists of setting up a small stage with whatever’s at hand and waiting for the actors to arrive.” I don’t know whom I was waiting for but they’ve arrived.

On değişik ülkede yirmi iki farklı müzeyi kapsayan, Houston’daki NASA müzesinden Bodrum’daki Sualtı müzesine kadar uzanan bu çalışma, insanları doğal halleriyle fotoğraflama arayışımdan doğdu.

Yetişkin insanlar müzelere sadece kendi istekleri ile, yani özgür iradeleri ile giderler. Müzelerde bir tanıdığa rastlama, bir menfaat sağlama gibi beklentiler olmadığı gibi, son derece rahat kıyafetler seçilir; hele ki yabancı bir ülkedeyseniz. Ayrıca müzeye keyif aldığınız şeyleri görmeye gittiğiniz için kafanız rahat, içiniz huzurludur.

Dolayısıyla insanlar müzelerde günlük toplumsal maskelerini çıkararak dolaşmaya çok yatkındırlar, çünkü çevreleriyle ilgilenmezler. İşte bu nedenle insanları müzelerde fotoğraflamayı sevdim, en doğal hallerinde.

“Görmek, bazen eldeki imkanlarla küçük bir tiyatro sahnesi kurmak ve aktörleri beklemektir” derler. Kimi beklediğimi bilmiyordum, ama geldiler.
